&nbsp\;\n Can Artificial Intelligence Help Us Understand the Universe Bett
er?\nScience for You – SciFY invites you to the SciFY Academy event “AI &a
 mp\; Astronomy” on Thursday\, 5 November 2026\, 19:00 – 21:00\, at Impact
Hub Athens (28 Karaiskaki St.\, Athens). Four scientists from the National
Observatory of Athens and NCSR “Demokritos” will use everyday language an
d real-world examples to show how we study the Universe today and the role
Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays in it. The event is open to the genera
l public\, and no background in astronomy is needed.\nParticipation is fre
e and open to everyone.Registrations will be accepted on a first-come\, fi
rst-served basis\, as seating is limited.A Certificate of Attendance is av
ailable to anyone who wants one.\nBook your free ticket here\nThe event wi
ll focus on questions such as:\n\nHow does AI help scientists analyze huge
amounts of data and better understand the Universe?\nHow is AI used to st
udy the Sun and phenomena that can affect systems on Earth?\nHow are parti
cles arriving from the depths of space detected on the floor of the Medite
rranean Sea?\nWhy can it be useful to turn scientific data into sound\, an
d how can this make astronomy more accessible?\n\nSee the event program he
 re\nAbout the speakers:\nDr. Fiori-Anastasia Metallinou\, Astrophysicist a
nd Science Communicator at the National Observatory of Athens\, will open
the event. She will present a different way to understand space data: turn
ing it into sound with the help of AI (sonification). She will explain how
these “sounds of space” can be used:\n\nto communicate astronomy to the g
eneral public and give people with visual impairments better access to sci
entific knowledge\,\nin music composition and the arts.\n\nNext\, Dr. Mano
s Saridakis\, Research Director at the Institute for Astronomy\, Astrophys
ics\, Space Applications and Remote Sensing of the National Observatory of
Athens\, will use simple examples to explain how AI:\n\nhelps scientists
identify patterns and compare observations with their theories\,\ncan brin
g us closer to understanding dark matter\, dark energy and the evolution o
f the Universe.\n\nThen\, Dr. Aimilia Smyrli\, Astrophysicist and Head of
the Education Office at NCSR “Demokritos”\, will talk about the Sun throug
h the “lens” of AI. She will talk about:\n\nhow AI helps scientists study
solar activity and better understand space weather\,\nhow intense solar ac
tivity can affect satellites\, communications and technological systems on
Earth.\n\nFinally\, Dr. Evangelia Drakopoulou\, Astroparticle Physics Sen
ior Researcher at NCSR “Demokritos”\, will give the talk “AI &amp\; Astrop
article Physics”. She will show how AI helps in the search for extremely r
are signals from the Universe. She will discuss:\n\nhow machine learning a
lgorithms pick out a rare signal from huge amounts of “noise” and help sci
entists study the properties of particles\,\nhow similar techniques can be
applied in other fields\, such as medicine and environmental monitoring.
